Position Summary:

This position is responsible for repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles and equipment.

Major Duties:

  • Performs engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, and transmission repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts scheduled preventative maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
  • Performs preventative maintenance by checking anti-freeze, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulic systems, tires, and safety equipment on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, and mowing tractors.
  • Performs emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary; troubleshoots equipment failures at job sites.
  • Welds and fabricates parts.
  • Maintains the shop and assigned tools; performs housekeeping duties.
  • Repairs and paints damaged parts on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting procedures.
  • Knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of engines.
  • Skill in diagnosing defects in vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in repairing vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in welding and fabricating parts.
  • Skill in operating equipment, including a backhoe, bulldozer, and tractor
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
